Valero Q3 Earnings Surge Sixfold to $6.8 Billion on Refining Boom

Home Energy Company News By Charles Kennedy - Oct 22, 2026, 10:00 PM CDT Valero Energy reported a surge in third-quarter 2026 earnings on Thursday, with net income climbing to $6.8 billion from $1.1 billion a year earlier as stronger refining margins more than offset a decline in processing volumes. The U.S. refining giant posted diluted earnings of $23.89 per share, compared with $3.53 in the third quarter of 2025. Adjusted earnings rose to $23.90 per share from $3.66, while quarterly revenue jumped 43% to $46.1 billion.

The biggest contribution came from Valero's refining business, which generated $8.8 billion in operating income, compared with $1.6 billion a year earlier. Refining margins nearly tripled to $39.24 per barrel of throughput from $13.14 per barrel in the comparable 2025 period, highlighting the substantial improvement in profitability from processing crude oil into transportation fuels. The earnings surge came despite a roughly 4% year-over-year decline in refinery throughput, which averaged 2.97 million barrels per day (bpd), down from 3.09 million bpd.

Valero's U.S. Gulf Coast refining operations accounted for much of the improvement, reporting operating income of $5.25 billion, compared with $940 million a year earlier. Its North Atlantic operations generated $1.84 billion, up from $532 million.

The results underscore the impact of elevated refining margins on the downstream oil industry. Earlier in 2026, Valero had identified resilient global transportation fuel demand, constrained refining capacity and geopolitical supply disruptions as factors supporting stronger refining economics. Valero's renewable diesel operations also delivered a turnaround.

The Diamond Green Diesel joint venture generated operating income of $353 million, reversing a $28 million loss in the third quarter of 2025. Renewable diesel sales averaged 3.4 million gallons per day. Meanwhile, Valero's ethanol segment reported operating income of $272 million, up from $183 million a year earlier.

Ethanol production reached a quarterly record of 4.8 million gallons per day. On the operational front, Valero completed its fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) unit optimization project at the St. Charles refinery during the quarter.

The project, previously budgeted at $230 million, was finished on schedule and within budget and is expected to increase production capacity for higher-value products, including gasoline and alkylate. Strong earnings translated into substantial cash generation. Valero reported $6.9 billion in operating cash flow during the quarter, while adjusted operating cash flow reached $7.3 billion.

Capital investments totaled $432 million. The company also repaid $526 million in maturing debt and ended September with $9.8 billion in cash and cash equivalents against $8.6 billion in total debt. Valero said shareholder cash returns represented 52% of adjusted operating cash flow during the quarter.

The latest results highlight the sensitivity of refinery earnings to fuel market conditions, with sharply higher processing margins driving substantial profit growth even as overall throughput declined.
